The Three Cornered Copse

I’ve been walking along a ribbon of land called The Three Cornered Copse. Hove Council bought it from the Marquis of Abergavenny in 1935, having borrowed £1,524. The copse rises up the Northern slope of the Goldstone Valley, passes between the back gardens of the big houses on Woodland Drive and Woodland Avenue, and emerges near Green Ridge and the South Downs National Park. The pit in the fourth image was left by a fallen tree, lost to the Great Storm of 1987. There’s something about the copse—traveling as it does between garden gates and fences—that makes it feel like a meeting place for sleepwalkers.
